What does the distortion switch on my guitar do?

I have a "Kramer Focus VT-211S Fatboy Standard guitar" and I thought that the distortion switch would switch between bluesy, hard rock, and wah noises from my guitar but switching it around doesn't seem to make it sound any different. So I'd like one of two things, An explanation of what I do with a distortion switch, or I'd really like a small list of affordable "under $100" distortion switches or pedals or whatever that will give me all those noises.
