Why was a Clockwork Orange considered so violent?

Sure, in the 1980's movies became much more graphic in their violent content so it's pretty tame by today's standards, but there were plenty of other violent movies in the 1960's and 1970's. Why did people single out this movie in particular and call for it to be banned?
